Inspiring learning beyond the classroom: Interview with Vanessa Briggs

Vanessa Briggs is the Curriculum Lead and Safeguarding Lead at Co Adventurers. With over 30 years in education, she is dedicated to supporting children with diverse learning needs and helping them re-engage with their education. During a recent multimedia day at our St Thomas Campus, Vanessa spoke to Al Gibson about the importance of alternative learning opportunities in Exeter

Al: Vanessa, could you introduce yourself and tell us what you do at Co Adventurers?

Vanessa: My name is Vanessa Briggs. I have worked for Co Adventurers for three years. I have been an educational professional for over 30 years. My role here is as curriculum lead, and I am also the safeguarding lead. In the future, I hope to take on the role of head teacher.

Al: What are the key elements of the curriculum at Co Adventurers, and how does it differ from mainstream schooling?

Vanessa: Our focus is on inspiring children through imagination, creativity and curiosity. Mainstream education often prioritises academics and some children can get lost in that system. Our team led by David Slater, aims to create a curriculum that engages children, encourages them to love learning and meets them where they are in their journey.

Al: What inspired you to join Co Adventurers, and what do you find most rewarding about working here?

Vanessa: I have always worked with vulnerable children and those with special educational needs. My passion is supporting them and their families to access the best education possible. Co Adventurers is fully aligned with that mission. Seeing a child flourish and thrive because of the support we provide is the most rewarding aspect of my work.

Al: Can you share a story of a child who has been positively impacted by Co Adventurers?

Vanessa: One young person I’ve worked with for three years was unable to leave his home due to anxiety and other challenges. Over time, through tailored support, he has re-engaged with learning, gained confidence, and is now considering college, something that seemed impossible when we first met him.

Al: What types of children do you work with?

Vanessa: We support children who struggle in mainstream education for various reasons. Some may have been excluded or are at risk of exclusion, while others need extra support for social and emotional needs. Our role is to ensure they receive the right education in a way that works for them.

Al: As the safeguarding lead, how do you ensure students are protected at Co Adventurers?

Vanessa: Safeguarding is at the heart of everything we do. We have rigorous policies in place, and our staff are highly trained to identify risks and provide the necessary support. We work closely with parents, local authorities and health services to ensure every child’s safety and well-being.

Al: What impact have you seen on students who engage in outdoor education and skills training?

Vanessa: Outdoor education and hands-on skills training are crucial for many of our students. These activities encourage creativity, resilience and problem-solving. Physical activity also plays a significant role in their well-being, and many children thrive when given the opportunity to learn outside a traditional classroom environment.

Al: We’re sitting in a workshop – why is skills-based learning important for students?

Vanessa: Our curriculum is project-based and multidisciplinary, encouraging hands-on learning. This workshop allows students to engage in practical activities that inspire them, build confidence and develop skills they can use in the future.

Al: That’s great. Finally why would a teacher, social worker or parent choose Co Adventurers for a child?

Vanessa: At Co Adventurers, we never give up on a child. We support them from where they are and help them progress at a pace that suits them. We focus on their whole development, not just academics. Parents and professionals choose us because we provide a safe, nurturing and flexible learning environment that helps children rebuild confidence and re-engage with education.
